Today we are in the presences of many fabulous designers who have made their name and shown off their class. Calvin Klein has been personably one of my favorite designers. He has started from the bottom of nothing to creating his way to one of todays’ greatest designers. Calvin Klein was born in Bronx, New York on November 19, 1942. He was the middle child born to Flo and Leo Stern. Calvin did not just ‘become’ a designer, he was born into a family where his grandmother was a seamstress and he obtained his adoration of sewing from her.
His mother too encouraged his love for art and fashion. Most of Klein’s progress began even when he was a younger teen, he spent his time sketching designs and sewing while his other friends spent their time participating in sports. After high school Calvin studied his fashion dream at Manhattan’s preeminent Fashion Institute of Technology, he also accompanied his first wife their, Jayne Centre. During his studies at school he also interned for a suit manufacturer on Seventh Avenue where he worked long nights and spent weekends there as well to make his designs flawless.
In 1968 Calvin launched his clothing company. All Calvin could have imagined came true and more with the hard work he had put towards the years ahead of him. Calvin Klein Inc. first started up 1968 with Calvin Klein designing and his long time childhood friend Barry Schwartz dealing with the business half. Calvin started to design and sell women’s coats by the 1970s and increased the labels names with many other popular fashion items. Calvin added a sportswear collection and boosted in popularity by including a complete women’s ready-to-wear collection.
Calvin Klein established his name for himself by designing sleek and clean apparel that have been represented through out the years. His collections use neutral tones and earthy colors such as browns, off whites, dark greens and more. What also made his collections a major sensation was the fact that his designs could be worn interchangeably with others to create diverse blends. His one big hit during his launch was his original designer jeans. The jeans brought a huge success to the label and knocked out the sales before and now making them bigger. The CK Jeans collection gave a huge popularity increase to the Calvin Klein label.
Calvin was a designer for more than just apparel; he designed the intimates and underwear for female and male buyers. Calvin was actually the first to design women’s underwear in the familiar shape of men’s jockey shorts. In 1982 Calvin Klein also was the initial designer to make men’s underwear as a desired marketing product rather than just simply practical. As Calvin kept his incoming numbers high he also kept his close friends who wore his more elegant designs such as Gwyneth Paltrow, Sandra Bullock, Helen Hunt, and Julia Roberts. As Calvin Klein kept up in the game, so did his name publicly.
His marketing half was always figuring out ways to make new and shocking advertising campaigns. In 1977, less than ten years after the brand had developed before the public Calvin Klein was successfully pulling in $30 million a year. Calvin knew that this was only the start and that soon the business would be blooming. By the 1990s Calvin Klein’s reputation was known for his provocative commercials featuring teenagers posing inappropriately. Many viewers saw this as pushing boundaries for the company but even though the ads were disliked among many, the sales continued to become larger.
Klein took into consideration of what was said and canceled the Ads but not before the publicity was already apart of everyday conversation. Even though the company went through it’s trials of the public giving the opinion they did not like Calvin Klein still continued to conquer the fashion world. Today Calvin has exceeded in receiving numerous awards for his designs such as the COTY Award three times consecutively in 1973 to 1975, which made him the youngest designer to receive that honor.
Calvin also has received the Council of Fashion Designers of America Award in 1986. Presently Calvin Klein is an international business with individual divisions for Asia, Europe, and Japan. Among his three lines are The Calvin Klein Collection that holds men, women, and home; cK for women and for men; and cK Jeans for women, men, and kids. In 2003, Calvin Klein sold over the company to clothing maker Phillips Van Hausen. Calvin Klein put his heart and soul into his works and now left a great name standing for many to discover more and to let the name live on.
