Greek Word Study of Conscience Essay

I. dialegomai In classical and Hellenistic Greek culture The Greek words dialegomai was usually used for “converse” or “discussion. ” In the time of the great philosophers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, the art of persuasion and demonstration was developed as well as the establishment of the idea and the investigation of demonstration. In fact, dialegomai is the only way to reach the idea in Greek philosophy, so it is a crucial importance.

The word dialegomai means “to confer” or “to negociate” in a speech, in a debate, or an address of problem; sometimes it can even be used for disputing. However, it is strongly differentiated from anagignoskein, which means to give a lecture. It can be translated as simply as “to speak to someone” and “conversation. ” Or sometimes according to the author’s intent, it can mean “to treat of something” or ‘to debate with someone” In the New Testament, there is no instance of the classical use of dialegomai in the philosophical sense.

In the sphere of revelation there is no question of reaching the idea through dialectic. What is at issue is the obedient and percipient acceptance of the Word spoken by God, which is not an idea, but the comprehensive declaration of the divine will which sets all life in the light of divine truth. dialegomai occurs in three senses in the New Testament. In the first sense, God “addresses encouragements as to sons;” in the second sense it is used in Paul’s addresses in the assemblies “delivering of religious lectures or sermon;” and in the third sense it indicates “disputing. II. dialogizomai A. dialogizomai in the Greek and Hellenistic world There are two meanings for the Greek word dialogizomai, which is a composite of the dia and logizomai.

The first meaning “to reckon” is not found in the New Testament, but can be understood in the sense of “to reckon as”. And the second meaning, “ to consider” in the sense of “to ponder” with a philosophical point of view means “to reflect on something” or “to consider something. When related to the Bible it is used in the sense of “to consider the ways of God” or “to remember” or “to keep in mind the ways of God” If the study goes further, it can be understood with the meaning of dialogos, which means “to debate” or “to engage in philosophical discussion or investigation”. It can be understood as “to discuss something” or from an official technical view it means “to hold a convention” over which the administrator presides for the purpose of reviewing the governmental affairs. B. dialogizomai in the New Testament

There are different meanings found in the New Testament but in this word study, at least two important meanings will be analyzed. Like the Greek and Hellenistic world, one of these two meaning is “to ponder” or “to consider”, it appears in some passages in the book of Matthew and Luke were other words are added in order to give a deeper sense. With the influence of Hellenism, at that time this term could be understood as dialogue or reflection. However, when reading those passages it gives an impression of a meaningful and profound discussion about a truth very crucial. III. dialogismos A. ialogismos in the Greek and Hellenistic world Like the previous translation dialogismos could mean “reckoning”, it could mean “to discuss” in the sense of instructive discussion, it could be used technically as “convention”. But another meaning is “deliberation” or “reflection” when it was concerning a particular teaching. And finally it was used for judicial investigation and decision. B. dialogismos in the New Testament The term dialogismos in the New Testament is associated with the sense of “evil thought” referring to the harsh Pharisees, the ambitious thoughts of others and the “anxious reflection” and “doubts” of the disciples.

Like we have seen earlier, dialogismos can be understood as “discussion” or “deliberation”. But it can be translated as “without wrath or disputing” as well. Personal Reaction I chose to do the word study on the word “Conscience” because this word is very crucial for human being. I have started to consider this concept of conscience when I was studying the book of Job and the book of Proverbs. My definition of “Conscience” it is the inner aptitude, faculty, intuition or judgment of the intellect that distinguishes right from wrong.

The moral principle that controls or inhibits the actions or thoughts of an individual may derive from values or ethical norms (it can be also principles and rules). It is in the conscience that everything starts whether good or bad. Therefore God is a God of conscience because even before the creation of the human race all his heavenly creatures, the angels, had their own conscience. Thus, when man was created one of the first privilege and ability he had was to act after his own conscience. He was able to choose what he wanted to do.

And human being is subjected to make choice not only on a daily basis but certainly at every single moment of our lifetime (probably every twenty (20) seconds, or even less, we are making choices), whether aware of it or not. So my point of view on this topic is that in order for someone to be consciously balanced and to be wise in his life, the best choice this person can make is to be taught by the Creator of this concept of conscience. This topic is so complex that only God who created the “free-will” can advised and lead somebody in the right and the best moral principle.

What I like while studying the “New International Dictionary of the New Testament Theology and Exegesis” the first thing that caught my attention were the different variants found for the word conscience. Although the Greek translation of this word is dialegomai there are at least two other translation that makes the meaning of the word broader. Furthermore, each translation gathers two or three different other meaning, which gives you a glimpse of how far the meaning of this word can reach. The author made the relation between the Greek and Hellenistic world and the New Testament.

But what I enjoyed the most is that I realized that the great philosophers are trying to look for a meaning or to create a meaning for this word whereas in the Word of God, the Bible, the word is explained and it is used better. I had the impression that the sacred Scriptures mastered this concept. And even these great philosophers made some references to the word of God. This is the proof that God is in control of all the questions, and even when something seems to be difficult to solve and to grasp, since God is the Creator of everything, He can teach us to overcome it.
